Socks and jocks are often derided as awful gifts, but I think they’re good gifts. You see, socks and jocks actually wear out over time, necessitating new ones. I’ve never known anyone who wore out their silk jewellery roll and was therefore delighted to receive another. Nor their Moroccan tagine, lavender heat pack or set of whimsical wine glass identifiers. Believe it or not, there comes a time in a woman’s life when she’s been around so long she actually owns all of these things already, and receiving duplicates can be oddly deflating. But taking one’s cash and cards out of a grubby, threadbare wallet and putting them into a shiny new one feels like a fresh start. Books, CDs and photo albums are also good choices for the woman who has everything.
